Those of you who know me probably know that while I don't actively dislike the colour pink... I don't exactly like it either. That being said, I actually found myself wearing Apple Kid as a full mani for two days rather than just swatching this polish! Opaque in two coats, this is an insanely cheerful colour. The glitter is quite subtle even in full sun, and removal is easy peasy. The blue tones make it definitely fuschia rather than a neon or hot pink.

The mini bottles are really cute, I've not seen any quite like them before. The long shape also means the brushes are the same length as a regular-size bottle and this makes application very easy.
Bottles are 15ml and will set you back $10 from the Rainbow Honey store (US customers only), $11.85 from Femme Fatale Cosmetics (international). More holo goodness! Cirque Colours are a US-based brand that is carried in the Femme Fatale Cosmetics store. They have a range of absolutely amazing holos and glitter toppers and I was really excited to get my hands on this bottle.
This mani was done with two coats. The holo is insanely strong, the colour is rich and just gorgeous. All of these pictures are with topcoat - some holos lose a lot of their colour and shimmer once you put a topcoat on. Not these ones.
The holo hexes flash lime, grass green, aqua, gold, silver and teal. They have a tendency to clump together which is why I used 1-2 coats. It's fairly smooth after just one coat of topcoat, but if you're rough on your hands, you might lose a few hexes from the clumps.

Horsea is a baby blue crelly with tiny aqua and matte yellow glitter, larger round aqua glitter, medium matte yellow and white glitter, and large matte white hex glitter. A very glittery one!

This is three coats, sans topcoat so it looks a bit gritty. Lots of VNL and a bit of patchiness in the base. I would recommend layering this over a baby blue for maximum opacity and to be able to lay out the glitter better, as they do come out quite thick. I think even an aqua base would work for this polish.
The website description for this one isn't very good. Dreary is a deep matte charcoal with tiny silver glitter. I would recommend using this over a sticky base to hold the glitter on. If you use Pixie Epoxy, make sure to let it 'set' before applying Dreary, I got a bit of patchiness on the right side of my swatch.

All the colours were wonderfully pigmented and smooth. I love the names Detrivore uses - so unusual and wonderfully morbid! :)
Purple with green (or blue) iridescence is one of my weaknesses and seems to be a popular colour for indies to produce (not that I'm complaining!) Herbivore from Fyrinnae, Dulcinea from Aromaleigh and Hummingbird from Sobe Botanicals come to mind. I'll do a comparison post later on.
I really like this because 1) Malcolm Reynold's butt and 2) it's a really smooth, satiny gold-toned khaki. Makes an excellent lid colour for my olive-y skin, and I can see it being stunning against dark skin, and a great outer corner/crease colour for pale people.

Have you picked up any of the Colour of the Month eyeshadows from Shiro? This brings me up to three and I really like all of them. My first was Dance of Death swatched here. Jade Carverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06831429994944800039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8568656610692395739.post-33536889725497807552013-08-13T08:49:00.000+08:002013-08-13T08:49:00.126+08:00Review and swatch: Arcane Lacquer Vast & VagueAll the Australian indies bursting onto the scenes with nail polish certainly make ME happy. My wallet not so much. Sometimes it's hard to keep up! I ummed and ahhed for ages when it came to ordering from Arcane Lacquer - this brand is extra special because it's made by Nail Gun XS, a blogger whose stunning swatches are used by many other indie brands. In the end I went with Vast & Vague for my first purchase, as tiny neon squares in a dusty pastel base wasn't something I had in my collection.
Bec recommends 2-3 thin coats if you're not layering the polish. I used 4 coats to get it opaque. In the photos it looks good but in person, I could still see a bit of VNL. Vast & Vague has a soft, cool grey base with sky blue microshimmer, and square glitter in white, light grey and lime green.
I really, really love this polish. The whole Arcane Lacquer line would be perfect for someone who needs polish a bit less blingy for work, or even if you're just not a fan of the chunky, blingy glitters that most indie polish makers produce. Vast & Vague was extremely easy to remove as well, since the glitters are more of an accent than the feature of the polish.

And here I put 2 coats of Vast & Vague over one coat of Mode Cosmetics VIP, which is a cool grey creme. I also managed to get a bit more green glitter out of the bottle for this swatch.
I'm definitely keen to pick up some more Arcane Lacquers. You can get them from her Etsy store, Femme Fatale Cosmetics, and soon in Llarowe. Sadly for us Australians, a ThinkGeek purchase is a special occasion only deal, or a group purchase, because the only shipping options they do are expedited international. It's stupidly fast and also stupidly expensive. On a whim at the end of May, I visited their website and wishfully filled my cart with Geek Chic eyeshadows - they had a small range, but they had two of the colours I REALLY wanted. Imagine my surprise and delight when I checked the shipping options and saw they'd added economy for international shipping! Instead of paying $40+ to get my order within the week, I could pay $9 and wait a bit longer! So I got 3 Geek Chic eyeshadows and a little heart hand warmer for stupidly cheap, since my gift certificate covered nearly everything.
This pulls really pink-y, copper-y on me. I don't see any green or blue highlights. It's definitely going to be a nice soft, flattering lid shade for me.
Whilst I didn't get anything crazy exciting, the shadows are really gorgeous and wearable. I can see myself reaching for these often for work looks. Geek Chic have a whole bunch of really freaking cool themes for their collections - The Princess Bride, Supernatural, Mass Effect, Farscape, Firefly. ARGH I WANT IT ALL. I'd like to try some brights next. Maybe even some of their lip products.
For my mani I used one coat of Nidoran Australis Manic Panic, a red-toned violet - so please keep in mind that this has made the base colour a bit brighter and darker than it would be if I had used it alone, or over a lilac/lavender polish. Nidoran applied surprisingly smooth for such a glittery polish! I got good coverage with my single coat, even if a lot of the blue and larger white glitters stayed in the bottle.

Noble Garden is absolutely packed with glitter. Grass green in small round, small and large matte hexes are the predominant thing. There's also tiny round purple glitters, larger round pink glitters and large orange hexes. At certain angles, some of the small green hexes flash blue!
I don't own any Lynderellas, but this polish reminds me a bit of Salad Days (minus the bar glitter, which is a bonus for me since I'm not a fan of it). I'd love to see a comparison between the two! This is one coat over Mode Cosmetics High Fashion, an almost-black navy cream. It could probably use another coat of top coat, it's a bit rough at the moment.
Left to right, top to bottom: 001 - Bulbasaur, 004 - Charmander, 039 - Jigglypuff, 032 - Nidoran, 054 - Psyduck, 041 - Zubat.

These babies were only released as a collection, with whatever left-overs to be sold singly. I really didn't want to miss out on Bulbasaur, Nidoran or Zubat, so I grabbed the set. I won't be swatching Jigglypuff or Psyduck as those are going to friends. All of these except for Zubat and Charmander are STILL available in the Mckfresh etsy store! I'm showing you Zubat today, even though you can't have it. Muahahahaha ;)

Zubat is described as "beautiful purple/blue shimmer with purple and navy glitters, silver dust." I layered one coat over two coats of Revlon Rock, which is a deep purple creme.
No fishing required, but if you like fairly thick glitter coverage, you'd want to do two coats. With one coat, it dries quite smooth. I only needed a one layer of topcoat.
We were asked to create a nail art tutorial using 3 different shades. I decided to go with some simple skittle nail art that doesn't require a lot of tools, time or skills.

Striping tape and dotting tool from Born Pretty

The great thing about striping tape and dotting tools is that if you don't have them, you can use other things! Regular tape cut into smaller strips, or even cut with patterned craft scissors is fine. Dotting tools can be substituted with toothpicks, kebab sticks, pins, tweezers, you get the picture.

The first thing you want to do is paint your nails with your base colour and let it dry. With all nail art you want a really dry base, so you don't smudge, dent or accidentally remove the base when you start playing around with designs. I used 3 coats of Sky and Fairy Floss. Camo only needed 2 thin coats.

Making stripes requires a wee bit of patience and coordination. Try to space them out as evenly as possible, lay them out straight, and ensure there are no air bubbles separating the tape from your nail. You want an excess of tape on one end so you can pull it off after adding the top layer.

Paint an even layer over the tape! You'll want to use an opaque polish for your overcoat colour so you only need to do 1-2 coats.

You can either use your fingers or tweezers to carefully pull the tape off. One piece at a time! You'll want to do this when the polish is set but not dry - so give it about 30 seconds.

For polka dots, since I'm not very coordinated, I used varying levels of pressure to create different sizes, and placed them randomly. There are many different sizes of dotting tools, and they usually come in sets, but I just used the single large size for all my dots.

The reason that you want to use a more pigmented colour to create your stripes, is that if you use a more sheer colour as your overlay, you end up needing to pile it on and it just won't end up looking as good. Note my attempt to ignore my own advice and layer Fairy Floss over Camo on my thumb. I experienced pooling around the sides of my nail and LOTS of bubbling the next day. It also needed much more topcoat to smooth it out.
You'll need to experiment with topcoats to make sure they don't smudge your design. I waited til they were mostly dry and then used my usual Revlon Quick Dry topcoat. The polka dots smeared a teeny bit, but not much.
I can't find the official description for Harlow on the Zoya site (these polishes were released about a million years ago anyway) but I would describe it as a purple-toned magenta with fine silver shimmer. It's opaque in two thin coats, dries SO FAST and the velvet matte effect is just stunning.
The only issue I had with this lacquer is that, because you can't topcoat it without losing the matte effect and I use my hands a lot at work, it develops tipwear super fast. This is after one day:
WHAT IT IS:
A base coat that will make glitter polish removal easier without resorting to the foil method or one of those wacky little remover devices.

WHAT IT ISN'T:
A base coat that will make glitter polish removal as easy as removing regular nail polish.

Revolution is a clear base. I didn't experience any staining while using it (even with those bleedy pigment type polishes). I always used 2 coats of product, which is what they recommend. It's a lot runnier and more watery than any of the other basecoats I've used, but does fill in ridges pretty well after 2 coats. I found it dried really fast. However, it doesn't play nice with the formulas of some nail polishes. I had no issues using Revlon or Illamasqua, for instance, but if I applied any Mode Cosmetics over Revolution after only 5-10 mins of dry time, I got big cracks in the Mode polish.

Not sure if this is total incompatibility or if I just need to let it dry for longer. This was a pretty big disappointment for me since I use Mode polishes a lot.

The instructions to remove (soak cotton pad in remover and hold against nail for 15 seconds) are extremely optimistic. I find the best results eventuate from holding the pad there for a minute or so. You will still need to scrub, but the glitter comes off a LOT easier than with regular basecoat. When larger pieces of glitter remain stubbornly stuck, I found I could actually use my other nail (I mean an orange stick! Bad blogger! Nails are not tools!) to scrape off the larger pieces and still have the base polish stick on the nail afterwards, which was a lot easier to remove and meant I didn't damage my nail plate by doing that.

Something about the ingredients mean that after removal, Revolution will leave little spots of weirdness on your nail bed. A swipe over all your nails with a clean pad soaked in remover will take off most of the left-over product. If you're naughty/lazy you can scrape them off.

Verdict? This isn't really the miracle product I was expecting, which means I was either expecting too much or something about my body chemistry meant it didn't work as well as it did for the many people who gave it glowing reviews. I definitely don't regret buying it since it makes glitter removal easier without the hassle of the foil method, but if you're going to buy this, DON'T expect to be able to get rid of all your glitter polish with a few easy swipes, because that's not how it works!

I'm showing you Incendius today. I got one of the last bottles from Femme Fatale a few weeks ago. Usually I layer glitters over a base colour that matches it. One of the things I liked about Incendius was that it had a few metallic blue hexes scattered among the gold, orange and red that are the base of this incredible polish. I decided to try layering it over Mode Runway, a dark teal. I liked the result so much, my plan to glitter-fy just my ring fingers and thumbs turned into a full glitter mani.
If you've just fallen in love with Incendius, or are kicking yourself for having missed out on any other shade, GUESS WHAT?! Norway Nails still have them all in stock! You will, however, be paying around $30AU for a bottle, though. I actually missed out buying a full-size of Quivering Heart from Femme Fatale, so when I found it in the Singaporean stockist Beauty So Fly, I only hesitated a week or so before paying their similarly inflated prices for one of the 2 bottles they had left in stock. I've become quite the polish fiend lately!Jade Carverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06831429994944800039noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8568656610692395739.post-72433114787951630902013-07-07T07:51:00.000+08:002013-07-07T07:51:00.346+08:00Swatches: Mode Cosmetics Glitzy GlamPolishes like this are why I adore Mode Cosmetics. Glitzy Glam is a copper frost. It's a wee bit prone to brushstrokes but it's definitely manageable. Shown here is ONE coat. It's a true copper - orangey but with flattering pinkish undertones. Swatches done without topcoat. It dries shiny but not glossy.
It looks a bit messy because I'm out of practice with stamping and there's no topcoat over the stamp. Because I'm lazy. BUT it's opaque enough to stamp with! I adore metallic stamping.

To swatch the blushes, I put some BB cream on my arm (to give the product something to hold onto) and then buffed on a fair amount of product with a blush brush. This gives you a good idea of the base colour. Face swatches are patted on over BB cream - I dip the brush into the product, tap off excess, and then stipple with the same blush brush so that the duochrome/shimmers aren't blended away. Hopefully this will also showcase the ways that application can make these products even more versatile :)
My thoughts:
I adore the way orange/coral blushes look on me and this is definitely a favourite of mine. Richly pigmented so be careful when you're using this one!

Femme Fatale Cosmetics blushes come in three categories: medium shimmer, duochrome and mostly matte. You can get sample bags for $1.10 (same price as eyeshadow samples) or full size (10g) jar for $8.25. I reeeeeally want to try Snowplum, which is a matte purple blush. I also like the look of Fizzy Fruit, a shimmery coral. EDIT: Since starting this post I bought samples of both of those blushes and a few others, hence this post being part 1! Originally we were going to have a Thor, Lady Loki, Toni Stark and Bronwyn Banner (me!) however as the event grew closer our numbers dwindled. I had Toni for 3 hours on Sunday and did the rest of the day solo. Nobody asked for my picture. Oh well! I based my look off this promo image:
This was a lot of fun to do, even though I think the effect would have been much better if I'd used a foundation brush or even a different kind of sponge - I did want a gradient towards the middle of my face but the whole side ended up being a bit patchy. It did last really well though, this is me at the end of the day:
The paint on my hands took quite a beating and it was my first time using a sponge to do a gradient, which is why it's so messy.
There was a LOT of amazing cosplay at Supanova this year and fortunately between Tumblr, Fruitless Pursuits and Facebook, I get to re-live seeing my favourites and even see some that I didn't see in person over the weekend. It was crowded!

I'm not sure if I'm going to cosplay again, but slathering Kryolan on my face was definitely fun.Jade Carverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06831429994944800039noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8568656610692395739.post-80423126537106144292013-06-30T08:10:00.000+08:002013-06-30T08:10:00.558+08:00Dupe battle: Eyeko Fat Balm vs Silk Naturals & Sobe Botanicals! This is gonna be a long one! I purchased Eyeko Fat Balm in Frosting, which is a multi-purpose lip and cheek product, from a blog sale quite a while ago. I used it several times before I got around to doing a review - and while doing research for said review, discovered that the FatBalms had been discontinued. OOPS.

So instead of just reviewing a blush that nobody will be able to buy (I'm not Pink Sith, come on!) I decided to review the Fat Balm AND purchase a similar product from two indie companies to see if I could find a dupe for it!

The original product:
Eyeko Fat Balm in Frosting!
This is an extremely pigmented product, which means it's suitable for all kinds of skin tones. Yay! The large size makes it somewhat easy to use on your cheeks, but if you're using it as a lip colour you might want to apply it with your finger or a lip brush rather than straight from the tube.

The Fat Balms have a nice creamy consistency, very similar to a traditional cream blush. Easy to apply and blend, they are a bit drying as a lip product. I would definitely suggest pairing it with a lip balm or moisturising gloss. It has a satiny finish - not glossy but not quite matte either. This shimmer in this shade lends it a slightly frosty look, and it does stain the lips very nicely, so if you want a more long-lasting, less drying colour, you can definitely blot and apply a dedicated lip product over the top.

The silver shimmer accentuates ANY lip dryness.

Frosting looks shimmery in the tube, but when applied to the cheeks I find it ends up being just a plain pink. It is quite pigmented but can be sheered out if you'd like to use it as a base for a shimmery blush or apply a highlighter over the top. As a cream blush I found this surprisingly long-lasting, leaving me with a flush for up to 6 hours. After 8 it had faded significantly.

I really like the Eyeko Fat Balm, and was really sad that it had been discontinued, since I would have liked to try some other shades. I do feel that the name "balm" was a bit of a misnomer since the product wasn't moisturising at all. When they were still available they were £13 which translates to about $20AU, and they are/were 5.2g. The range consisted of 6 shades which you can see in a delightful Spanish review here.
Cherry Bomb has a very different texture - its noticeable immediately. Instead of the thick, stiff texture of traditional cream blush, this is thin and almost greasy. I had to swipe it on my lips several times to get opacity. This does mean it's more buildable as a blush, though. I striped roughly where I wanted colour and used my fingertips to blend, and it was very easy to smooth the product out. Despite the tube colour it looks extremely natural after 1-2 layers. It eventually dried down on my face. The packaging makes it easy to be precise with your application.
After 2 hours, a snack and a drink, my lips started feeling a bit dry. A check up with a mirror confirmed that only a slight pink stain remained of my initial application. The Fat Balm would have been dry-feeling, but still very visible at this point. The colour on my cheeks had not faded at all.

After lunch (5 hour mark) my cheeks still looked lightly flushed. The colour on my lips is completely gone and my lips feel dry and tight, as if I've been wearing nothing on them all day. Blech! I re-applied, blotted to take away the greasiness and applied one of my Lanolips glosses over the top. My lips instantly felt better. It took 10 hours for the blush to fade completely.

Colour-wise, it's a good match for Frosting on the cheek, even if it is a lot sheerer. The formula is completely different, however, and it's much too sheer to be a match as a lip product, not to mention it's the odd combination of greasy AND drying on the lips! If you're looking for a cheap cream blush I'd recommend this with no hesitation - they're $4.50 each and Silk Naturals currently have 10 different shades available, including a bronzer and highlighter. Some are cream and some have shimmer. The weight isn't listed on the website or the packaging because of differing ingredients, but Karen from Silk Naturals said (via email) that they are about 3.5g each.

Sadly, I'd have to say the Silk Naturals cream blush is NOT a dupe for the Fat Balms as a lip product or as a cream blush. The formula and pigmentation levels are too different, though the colour is similar.

Prima Donna seems to be more of a lipstick that can be used as a blush than the other two, which seem to be blush first, lipstick second. This is quite evident when applied - Prima Donna has a much more "lipstick" feel. It's a bit on the waxy side to begin with, but after 5-10 minutes on my lips (it was a bloody cold morning) it had softened and felt much nicer. I applied it on my cheeks in the same manner as the other two, dotting from the tube and using my fingers to blend. It has fairly strong pigmentation and is a lovely bright, blue-based pink - every so slightly darker and more flattering on the lips than Frosting. I would say it's a very versatile colour. It's quite a close match to Frosting, but has more depth to it. Satiny creme finish, minimal gloss and no frost or shimmer.
On the cheeks it blended really easily and was able to be sheered out or blended up for a more pronounced flush. It melted in very nicely and did not look too shiny. Sadly, after 3 hours the blush was kinda... gone. I still had colour on my lips, but it was starting to do the lipstick ring. After lunch I had a slight stain and a prominent ring left. I re-applied with a couple of layers since my lips were feeling a bit dry - not as dry as the Fat Balm makes them and nowhere near as bad as Cherry Bomb. This is definitely a product you can play with layering depending on how bright you want the colour. I didn't bother applying more on my cheeks, figuring it was an incompatibility with the BB cream that was causing it to disappear.

I decided to give the Sobe another go as a blush the next day. Using a stippling brush and applying over foundation seemed to give the blush much better vibrancy and staying power. 8 hours later and while the blush had faded significantly, I still had a pink glow. Stippling is definitely the way to go with this one - I was doubly impressed with its lasting power the second test, as I was wearing Benefit Hello Flawless. Even my HG finishing powder could not prevent my face becoming an oil slick with this foundation. I must have powdered at least 4 times during the day before giving up and wishing I'd brought makeup wipes with me. It was awful and such a shock after how nice my skin looks and feels with the Garnier BB cream!
I should mention Sobe products are scented/flavored with a custom mix called French Tart - "French Vanilla with a hint of mint and a touch of rose". I quite like it, but it's something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to fragrances. It's definitely the most lip-friendly formula of the three - it doesn't stain as much as Frosting, which could be either a positive or a negative point, depending on your needs.

0.33oz - translates to 9.3g of product. I thought that seemed way too much, since it's smaller than the Fat Balm so I weighed the lipstick on the scale we use for mail at work. It came in at 7g.

The Sobe Lip and Cheek colours are currently available in 43 shades of pink, red, orange, brown, purple, blue, black, green and all sorts of finishes ranging from cream to shimmer to duochrome. They'll set you back $9.99.

I wouldn't call it an exact dupe of the Fat Balms, but if you loved them I would definitely say give these a go. The colour on the lips is darker and arguably more flattering, and the colour on the cheek is almost exactly the same. Just be wary of the fact that if you use BB cream/tinted moisturiser and apply with your hands instead of a brush, you may have to re-apply it.

I think I'm pretty set in the cream blush category, and will be for quite a while! I'm definitely keen to try the Sobe lipsticks in other colours, though. Jade Carverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06831429994944800039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8568656610692395739.post-17418795410512917482013-06-27T07:44:00.000+08:002013-06-27T07:44:00.100+08:00Review and swatches: Models Prefer Moisture Lust LipsticksThe shades I have to show you today are Cupcake and Salted Caramel. I have heard these very enthusiastically compared to the Revlon Lip Butters in terms of moisture level, comfort and pigmentation. Sadly I don't have any lip butters to compare them to, but I can tell you that these are one of my favourite lip products of the moment.
Sheer but buildable, these lipsticks are luxuriously soft and moisturising on the lips and for such a soft product, they have really good staying power.
Cupcake is a very happy, flattering pink. It's bubblegum without being too loud. You can see a bit of settling in my lip-lines here, but I promise it's not visible in person at all.
Salted Caramel gives me total concealer lip! This picture shows a very light application. I was expecting it to be a lot darker. I don't usually go for beige-y lip colours, so this is actually really unique in my collection.

I waited so bloody long to finish this post that these lipsticks are now on sale at Priceline for $9.60 instead of the $12 I paid! Even at full price they're much cheaper than the Revlon Lip Butters. I really like the look of Berry Shortcake and Raspberry Sorbet. I haven't seen any swatches of those around, so I might have to try to get to a store to play with them.

Did you pick up any of the Moisture Lust lipsticks, or do you prefer your lipsticks with fuller pigmentation? It may have been in a blog or it may have been on Etsy. I DO remember that it was lust at first sight. I didn't look at it and think, "Oh, pretty!" or even "How unusual!" My eyes widened and my brain screeched "WANT!" Capitalism at its finest :P

I don't normally like brown polishes, but the contrast between the dark chocolatey base and the green and blue hex glitter had me wiping drool off my chin.
Bluebird II is thick. REALLY thick. I layered it over a dark base polish but I don't think I even needed to do that. The base is really pigmented and there is SO much glitter. No fishing or dabbing required to get the coverage in my swatches, just two coats. Because of how much glitter there is though, you'll need lots of topcoat to get it smooth. I've used 2 coats of Gelous and 2 coats of Revlon Quick Dry, and though it looks glossy I can still feel bumps if I touch my nails.
I got my bottle from Femme Fatale Cosmetics for $9 during their sale - they're usually $11 AU. I definitely would have paid full price for this, though. Smitten are based in the U.S. and have an Etsy shop. They're also available through Llarowe. I've no idea how long I've had this polish for - months, definitely - and not touched it. I know it's a gorgeous polish but I never bothered swatching it because it's one of those polishes nearly everybody owns or knows about. Even if you don't own Perplex itself, you probably own a dupe from another brand.

For those who have no idea what I'm talking about: in 2010 Chanel released a polish called Paradoxical, and the beauty world went nuts. The polish was a deep, cool brown base with strong plummy shimmer - very unique, great formula, widely praised. It really wasn't very long before dupes started appearing. Barry M Dusky Mauve. Ulta3 Twilight Fever. Revlon Perplex. Rimmel Hot List. Sportsgirl Supernatural. Nails Inc 80 Fulham Road. Essence Princess Prunella. Some ladies even got to layering CND Amethyst Sparkle over Models Prefer Purple Gray!

Unfortunately for Chanel, some of these dupes were absolutely dead-on colour-wise, comparable formula-wise, and springing up from so many brands at so many different price points, Paradoxical lost its allure for all but the most hardcore Chanel fans.

I prefer bright polishes over dark ones, as a general rule, so I guess it's not surprising that Perplex sat untouched for so long. What prompted me to reach for it was an entirely different polish altogether - Hare Polish Bury the Hatchetfish.
I thought that blue-purple flakies in a brown base sounded lovely, but BTH was decidedly taupe in a lot of the swatches I'd seen. Then I remembered, hang on! I have Revlon Perplex and a bottle of Inglot blue-purple flakies!
The combined effect of the flakies and Perplex's shimmer made the base look almost purple at times. The effect was dark and glowy and really pretty. This manicure lasted 3 days before my right thumb got a giant chip :(and yes, I have changed the shape of my nails yet again. Let's see how long I stick with square!Jade Carverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06831429994944800039noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8568656610692395739.post-74582219228016953922013-06-17T07:19:00.000+08:002013-06-17T07:19:00.097+08:00Review and swatches: Mode Cosmetics Beat the BlahI apologise in advance - what I thought was going to be a straightforward swatching session of a neutral, work-safe polish turned into one of those colour-accuracy nightmares.

When I first got "Beat the Blah" I thought, "what a weird name for a neutral polish!"

I first swatched it on a swatching stick, and was pleased to see it was one of Mode's beautifully opaque polishes. You can get away with one coat of this. I've done two for maximum opacity.

Then the problems came. "How do I describe this? Is it peach? Is it mauve? Is it beige? Or maybe taupe?" This polish just seems to defy description.

Getting a colour-accurate picture just didn't seem possible. Every different camera setting and lighting situation provided a photograph that wasn't quite right.
I thought this was going to be a boring polish. I thought the name was ironic. I was totally wrong - this polish is the most ridiculously complex neutral I've ever seen.

I can't even decide which picture is more colour accurate. Every time I look from my hand to the computer monitor I just don't know!

Because it's so opaque, I'd imagine it would make excellent undies for a whole number of neutral sheers - or even just a way to change up a shimmery neutral. I think it'd be stunning with a holo topcoat, too.

This one's not currently available from the Heritage Brands website, you'll have to scout out some chemists for this shade. Excuse me while I go stare at my nails for a while!
