He made such a point of having a queen, and having Gail say that women were equal in battle... there was just no reason to regress to medieval ethics after/around that. And the statements were so thrown out there, I don't imagine how they could be intended to provoke indignance except for accidentally. There was no surrounding context that would have provoked any reader response, if you get what I mean.
